Swalcliffe's approach to online learning, activities and therapeutic support.

As promised, this letter contains information about how the online full day timetable will look and work. As we said in our previous briefing update this takes account of the helpful feedback we received from families, students and staff following the last period of lockdown.

    1. Feedback point: Safeguarding must continue to be our top priority.

Solution: We will continue to add line managers onto the lesson observations and lessons will be recorded for safeguarding purposes.

    1. Feedback point: Lessons of one hour were too long.

Solution: We have reduced lesson length to 30 mins.

    1. Feedback point: The curriculum breadth was restricted, as longer lessons also meant fewer lessons per day.

Solution: Shorter lessons will allow for more lessons per day and therefore increase curriculum breadth.

    1. Feedback point: Time between lessons is important to recover and prepare for the next lesson.

Solution: We will maintain breaks of at least 30 mins between all lessons.

    1. Feedback point: The afternoon sessions feel too long.

Solution:  We will shorten the afternoon sessions to one tutor session and one lesson.  This means that online teaching will finish at 3.30 pm.  Unfortunately, this means we will lose lesson 6 on the current timetable, but this may be more realistic for students to maintain their levels of concentration.

    1. Feedback point: Tutor sessions help promote appropriate and rewarding social relationships

Solution: We will keep the tutor session in afternoon at 2.00 pm every day.  This will maintain a focus on having fun and socially appropriate social interaction.  We will also continue to cover the ‘Universal Provision’ and support student’s welfare during these difficult times.

If you would like to know more about ‘Universal Provision’ please contact Andy Sears on asears@swalcliffepark.co.uk

    1. Feedback point: Students still need full access to therapy support.

Solution: For students currently receiving therapy services these will now be offered remotely.

We may send therapy resources for him to complete in order to maintain and practise skills or help contain anxieties.

We may contact you/your son on a weekly basis by telephone, via email or Microsoft `Teams’ to offer advice and support.

We may offer your son therapy over Teams/telephone with a focus on maintaining and practising a specific target/area.

Although the therapy provision your son receives will look very different to how it does currently, please be reassured that we work as a fully integrated multidisciplinary therapy team and will remain in close contact, remotely, with each other to discuss each child currently open to our caseloads.  The service you receive, if any, may be provided by any of the therapists in our multidisciplinary team but will be delivered in a way that we deem best appropriate based on our clinical judgement.

    1. Feedback point: Keyworking is a fundamental part of student and family QoL.

Solution: Keyworking will continue on the same day but at 2.30pm.

    1. Feedback point: Music Lessons were really well received.

Solution: We will continue music tuition online.

    1. Feedback point: Technical support is really important to enable online access

Solution: All students to be given resources where necessary, so that we can ensure that every student can access online learning. Staff are also available to support students with technical issues.

If you have any questions about timetables, support or equipment you may need at home, please contact Andy Sears for daytime at asears@swalcliffepark.co.uk or tcummings@swalcliffepark.co.uk for evening activities.
